While the majority of this tale is factual, the part dealing with Sybil's ride has been told over many years with limited primary sources and in various versions. It is undisputable, however, that Sybil made the forty-mile ride amid a torrential thunderstorm, and successfully alerted her father's men to arms. Some of the varying details, such as who exactly was home when the messenger arrived, the tolling of church bells, the man who asked to assist her, and the highwayman who she averted, made no clear indication as to what exactly transpired and artistic license has been used to embellish these particular events.

Even Sybil's name has been changed over the years, for she herself had spelled her name "Sebal" on her Revolutionary War pension application.

Nevertheless, Sybil was congratulated not only by her family and all those in Dutchess County, but also by General George Washington. Even Alexander Hamilton wrote to her father, stating "I congratulate you on the Danbury expedition. The stores destroyed have been purchased at a pretty high price to the enemy."

Therefore, despite the minor discrepancies in fine details, Sybil's night ride amid darkness and driving rain, which was in fact twice as long and arduous as Paul Revere's, makes this sixteen-year-old girl's trek a highly laudable piece of early American heroism; one that all men, and especially women, can be most proud.
